Jerome
Preiss, Texas Ranger
February 29, 1924 – July 12, 2004
Jerome Preiss,
“Geronimo” to his friends, passed away after a lengthy illness
on July 12, 2004. He was born in Twin Sisters, Texas, on February 29,
1924. He is survived by his wife, Jean Ann Schrader.
Like most men of
his age, Jerome served his country during World War II. He was a naval
aviator tail-gunner. After returning to civilian life, he joined the
Department of Public Safety. On August 1, 1948, he became a student
Highway Patrolman. Twenty-two years later, on March 31, 1972, he retired
as a Texas Ranger.
During the six
years that he served as a Highway Patrolman, Jerome was stationed in
Pleasanton, San Antonio, Carrizo Springs, and Johnson City. It was while
he was stationed in Carrizo Springs that he became friends with the
celebrated commander of Texas Ranger Company D, Captain A. Y. Allee.
On December 15, 1956, Jerome promoted to the Texas Rangers and became
a member of Allee’s company. He was assigned to the deep Rio Grande
Valley city of Harlingen, where he stayed for ten years before transferring
to Seguin in 1966. He remained there until 1969, when he returned to
Harlingen. He was still in that city when he retired.
Jerome was well
known, especially for his legendary storytelling. Geronimo will be missed
by all who knew him.
