Richard
Bennie
September 3, 1940– February 23, 2006
The
Texas Ranger Hall of Fame is sad to report the passing of retired Texas
Ranger Richard Bennie of Seguin, Texas. He was 65 and is survived by
his wife Linda, son Ranger William Bennie, and daughter Keri Thompson.
Ranger Bennie served
the Texas Department of Public Safety from October of 1971 to 1987 as
a Highway Patrolman in Sherman, Texas, and a Patrol Sergeant in San
Antonio, Texas.
He joined the Texas Rangers in March of 1987 and was assigned to Company
“D” in McAllen. Ranger Bennie was assigned to investigations
in Hidalgo and Starr Counties and worked for Captain Jack Dean and Captain
C.J. Havrda.
Ranger Bennie was later transferred to Seguin. In 1995 his son, Trooper
William A. (Tony) Bennie, was promoted to the Texas Rangers. Richard
Bennie retired in August of 1996 and in January of 1997 took the position
of Chief Deputy in Comal County where he won great respect from the
community.
His accomplishments
as Chief Deputy included providing law enforcement to Bulverde, Texas,
before it created its own police department, expanding and upgrading
the Comal County jail, creating the county’s emergency operations
center and responding to two major floods that came less than four years
apart. Sheriff Bob Holder praised him stating:
“He brought
tremendous management and investigation experience to the sheriff’s
office. He had a wide range of contacts in the state, and I had them
elsewhere in the country. The man had credibility. They trusted him
and they believed in him. What you saw was what you got with Richard
Bennie.”
